Guava fruit

Depending on the species, guava can be of tomato size or as large as 13 cm in diameter. To eat: use a knife to slice the fruit lengthwise into 4-6 pieces, slice off the part containing the seeds; the kin is bitter but edible. Guava is often ready to eat when it is green and crisp. The flesh is crunchy much like eating a slice of apple. The taste is pleasant with mildly acidic flavour. Some Vietnamese however like to eat the guava when it is not completely ripe together with a dip made of fish sauce, chilli, salt and sugar. Sometimes, the guava slice is dipped in a mixture of salt and grounded red chilli pepper.

Rambutan fruit

The Rambutan is also unofficially known as Hairy Cherry because of the soft, fleshy hair-like projections around its covering which appears green or yellow, and turns red as the fruit ripens. Such name is derived from a Malaysian word ‘rambut’, meaning hair, of where the fruit originally grows. Well-cultivated in Vietnam after the fruit was introduced in the country, Rambutan now grows abundantly in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta area. Its fruit measures about 3-4 cm in diameter and breaking open the hairy outer peel exposes a white to translucent flesh that is firm and sweet, surrounding a hard seed beneath. With a hint of acidity to it, its taste is described as grape-like and is very refreshing. The fruits grow in large bunches, and with its attractive color and appearance, these fruit-bearing trees could be eye-catching just as how fruit stands along the roads and intersections come alive during Rambutan season when they are filled with the tiny bright red fruits.

Longan fruit

Longan fruit is also called Long Nhãn (means Dragon Eye in Vietnamese language), abundant in many provinces in the Viet Nam. Known as a close relative to the lychee, this fruit is also tiny (about 2 cm in diameter) with a brownish brittle covering. The peel can be easily removed by hand, usually by pressing its tip with the thumb and index finger. Once a part of the shell slightly breaks, the rest can be removed with ease. Inside it is a whitish translucent pulp enclosing a glistening black hard inedible seed. With its size, you can easily pop these pulps into the mouth since some of them do not contain seeds. Apart from not edible, the seeds also has a strong bitter taste to it, therefore, should never be eaten along with the flesh.

Lychee fruit

Mango fruit

Though widely grown in the Vietnam’s Southern provinces, mangoes are most abundant between March to May, known as mango season. When young, the fruit could be very green and gradually turns yellow, and when at its brightest yellow, indicates its ripeness. With its succulent sweetness and invigorating smell, all the fruits’ flavour is contained in its smooth-textured flesh on both cheeks hugging a single flat and oblong pit that is usually fibrous or hairy on the surface. To eat: Peel the fruit and carve the flesh lengthwise on both sides, keeping the knife as close as possible to the seed in the centre.
